The
elements for logical automata existed - self-regulating
machines using "feedback," such as the steam
engine with ball governor. Machines could be programmed
by punched cards and tape.
Writers
were journeying into the future. Samuel Butler began his
novel, Erewhon, with an essay entitled "Darwin Among
the Machines." Andrew Ure invented the principle
of the thermostat.
