Babbage's
introduction to his obsession was casual. He and John
Herschell (son of the astronomer William Herschell)
were checking some math tables and found several errors.
At one point Babbage said, "I wish to God these calculations
had been executed by steam." Herschell replied "It's
quite possible." The idea lodged in Babbage's brain.
In 1821, he began his fifty-year struggle.
