But Microsoft founder Bill Gates didn't become one of the most influential people in the world by sitting around. When Microsoft released its third incarnation of Windows, the software giant had taken the time to create a serious desktop environment that met the demands of the market.

Fans of the Mac, Atari and Amiga could still argue with some justification that Microsoft's Windows lacked the ease of use of the competing systems - but sales of IBM-compatible P.C.s with Windows installed soon dwarfed those of all other platforms combined.
