That the Apple II would succeed as well as it did was no sure thing a quarter-century ago.

It faced competition from several other computers also aimed at the then-new home and small business markets: The Ohio Scientific Challenger, the Processor Technology Sol (developed by Homebrew Computer Club founder and Computer Hall of Fame member Lee Felsenstein) and the Exidy Sorcerer among others. None of these systems or the companies that built them were able to survive the increasingly competitive personal computer wars, though.
